I remember these things when they were an as seen on tv product back in the early 90’s. They were cheesy then and they are cheesy now. Just look at that smartass in the picture! This product and it’s associated picture bring a few thoughts to mind: Did they have to make their own fake newspaper, or did they just grab a local paper for that photo shoot? It makes me wonder what the legalities of using someone else’s work as a prop is. Also, the nineties sucked, and I don’t think there is going to be much nostalgia around the era anytime soon.

I don’t talk about it much, but I’m a bit of a of a musician. I play bass guitar, I use synthesizers, and I use my computer to record and mix the whole thing.

When I got started, I wanted to make hip hop music, and I started out sampling records. At first, I didn’t have a good way to record stuff, so I would just record to cassette, pause the cassette and rewind the record, and re-record, thus making a loop. Then I would add layers over that. It was very primitive! A nice digital DJ system like this would have helped, but I ended up going the route of making original music from scratch. (and not from scratching, you see)

I eventually got myself a computer and some good recording software. I use Sony Acid Pro software for recording and mixing. I’m currently using acid pro 6, but I would definitely upgrade to the newest version, but to be honest, I didn’t know that had come out with a new version until just now! I’ve been using acid pro for a decade and I really like the ease of use, flexibility and power of the software. You can have as many tracks as your computer can handle- I typically end up with 20 or more tracks when I’ve completed a project.

I still recorded records, but I eventually made the shift to recording myself playing the keyboard- not only did I find the sound to be cleaner, but it was a much more flexible instrument… being that it was actually an instrument and all. I had a really cheap keyboard that I paid too much for at first. I eventually found a near pro level keyboard at a sale price that I could stomach. I then expanded it by adding a midi rack mounted synth that was pretty beastly.

Hear music I make using sony acid pro software here.

What you see here is an interactive art presentation. It’s basically a tape head connected to a glove, plus some cassette tape glued to a board of sorts. I could see this as potentially replacing the traditional turntable/record combo, while adding an extra helping of intuitive interface… and it would remove the problems of needles skipping and just plain old ruining your records. But, alas, in the hands of the general public, it kind blows.

I just love the legend of Zelda theme song. Apparently, the accordion is a great instrument for playing the lead part on, because this sounds great. I’m inspired to go downtown and become a modern minstrel myself. Bah! Who am I kidding- I’d rather sit around the house and play video games. Besides- I play the bass, and it needs electricity to be heard further than three feet away. Also, I don’t know any songs…. I can see the exit signs already- I’d better quit while I’m ahead… which in this case is before I even start. I’ll leave the public performance to the pros. Or amateurs. Whatever.

Here’s a hand made product that will enhance the look of your game room, adding a little retro 8-bit flair. These Duck Hunt wall and tv decorations are the perfect way to show your old school roots. The nice thing about this is that it works with all plasma tv stands and televisions. It’s a universal fit! The Etsy seller who made this doesn’t have any more for sale right now, and if you find that you are unable to monetarily entice her to create one for you… you can probably make your own with bead sprites:

I haven’t seen the sticker on a banana used for advertising anything but the banana producer… ever! It makes perfect sense that a monkey based product would want to advertise their product on a banana. I wonder just how effective this will be? I mean, video games and bananas don’t exactly go hand in hand. I’ve never seen people put stacks of fruit on their game tables or in their game rooms. This is possibly the first/last time that bananas (or fruit in general) have been used as advertising space.
