I don’t talk about it much, but I’m a bit of a of a musician. I play bass guitar, I use synthesizers, and I use my computer to record and mix the whole thing.

When I got started, I wanted to make hip hop music, and I started out sampling records. At first, I didn’t have a good way to record stuff, so I would just record to cassette, pause the cassette and rewind the record, and re-record, thus making a loop. Then I would add layers over that. It was very primitive! A nice digital DJ system like this would have helped, but I ended up going the route of making original music from scratch. (and not from scratching, you see)

I eventually got myself a computer and some good recording software. I use Sony Acid Pro software for recording and mixing. I’m currently using acid pro 6, but I would definitely upgrade to the newest version, but to be honest, I didn’t know that had come out with a new version until just now! I’ve been using acid pro for a decade and I really like the ease of use, flexibility and power of the software. You can have as many tracks as your computer can handle- I typically end up with 20 or more tracks when I’ve completed a project.

I still recorded records, but I eventually made the shift to recording myself playing the keyboard- not only did I find the sound to be cleaner, but it was a much more flexible instrument… being that it was actually an instrument and all. I had a really cheap keyboard that I paid too much for at first. I eventually found a near pro level keyboard at a sale price that I could stomach. I then expanded it by adding a midi rack mounted synth that was pretty beastly.
